PROJECT SYNOPSIS

Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd (Eskom) was afforded the opportunity by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) to commission a Climate Change Impact Assessment (CCIA) and a review of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports in response to appeals lodged against the Environmental Authorisation granted on 11 October 2017 for the proposed development of the Nuclear-1 Project at Duynefontein. Eskom appointed SRK Consulting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SRK) to review the Final Environmental Impact Report, Environmental Management Programme and specialist studies. The Promethium Group (Promethium) was appointed to undertake the required CCIA, presented as a separate CCIA Report (CCIAR).

PROJECT LOCATION

Cape Farm No. 34, Duynefontein and Coastal Strip Farm 1 375, Duynefontein, Western Cape (adjacent to the existing Koeberg Nuclear Power Station).

STATUS OF PROJECT

The EIA Review Report and CCIA were made available for public review and comment between 24 July 2023 and 23 August 2023 and this comment period was subsequently extended to 22 September 2023 by the Minister. A Public Open Day and Online Stakeholder Meeting were held on 07 August 2023 and 15 August 2023 respectively to discuss the findings of the Review Report and CCIA with interested stakeholders.

All comments received were recorded and responded to in an Issues and Responses summary.
