Black Mountain Mining (Pty) Ltd (“BMM”), part of the Vedanta Resources Limited mining group, mines and processes copper, lead, and zinc at the Black Mountain Mine and the open cast Gamsberg Zinc Mine near the town of Aggeneys in the Northern Cape.
The town of Aggeneys was established by BMM on the farm of Aggeneys in 1976 to provide support and accommodation for the nearby mines. The town needs to be expanded due to the increasing number of people being attracted to the town as a result of the expansion of mining activities and the associated special economic zone which planned in the area. The expanded town will require the expansion of supporting infrastructure, including roads, bulk electrical infrastructure, stormwater infrastructure, water reticulation, sewers and Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW), landfill and golf course, as well as the construction of a new cemetery and shooting range.
SRK Consulting (South Africa) Pty Ltd (SRK) has been appointed to undertake the Scoping and Environmental Impact Reporting (S&EIR, also referred to as EIA) process required in terms of the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998, as amended (NEMA). A Waste Management Licence (WML) application, in terms of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008 (NEM:WA) is required for the landfill as well. A Water Use Authorisation (WUA), in terms of the National Water Act 36 of 1998 (NWA) is required to authorise a number of Section 21 water uses.
