Short Project Title:

FINAL BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT (BAR) FOR THE PROPOSED WASTE LICENCE APPLICATION FOR THE SORTING OF GENERAL WASTE

Project Title:

FINAL BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT (BAR) FOR THE PROPOSED WASTE LICENCE APPLICATION FOR THE SORTING OF GENERAL WASTE AT THE ANGLO AMERICAN PLATINUM LIMITED (AMPLATS) WATERVAL SMELTER - ANGLO CONVERTING PROCESS, NORTH WEST PROVINCE (NWDEDECT REFERENCE NUMBER: NWP/WM/BP1/2013/13)

Project Synopsis:

The Anglo American Platinum- Rustenburg Platinum Mine (AAP-RPM): Waterval Smelter – Anglo Converting Process (ACP) Plant has a pre-existing waste sorting area where general and industrial waste are separated before being sent to landfill or recycled.
The wastes generated are limited to mixed industrial and domestic waste produced from the Waterval Smelter and ACP Plant which are temporarily stored in a facility with the area of approximately 1 328 m2 on Portion 14 of the Farm Waterval 303 JQ.  The existing waste sorting area is used to optimise recycling and disposal of the various waste streams. The wastes produced and their destinations are as follows:

  • Wood is collected and made available for reuse by the community;
  • Scrap metal and scrapped electrical cables are sold to scrap dealers;
  • Tyres removed from site are recycled by suitably qualified contractors;
  • Plastic (Polyvinyl chloride [PVC], High-density polyethylene [HDPE], Polyethylene; terephthalate [PET], plastic containers) are recycled
  • Paper and other domestic waste is taken to the Rustenburg Municipality landfill site;
  • Used oil (hazardous waste) is collected for recycling by a suitably qualified contractor;
  • Hazardous waste is taken to a licensed landfill (currently Holfontein) by a qualified contractor and the waste manifest provided to Waterval Smelter - ACP.

Generak waste

General waste taken to the Waterval Smelter – ACP Waste sorting area will comprise sorted and unsorted waste. Some sorting will be done at source but unsorted waste will be sorted at Waterval Smelter – ACP Waste sorting area.  The recyclable materials will be stored at the Waterval Smelter – ACP Waste sorting area prior to being transported away under contract.  The unrecyclable general waste will be disposed of at Rustenburg Municipality landfill site.

Hazardous waste
Temporary storage of hazardous waste at the Waterval Smelter – ACP Waste sorting area will not exceed 35 m3 of hazardous waste at any one time.  Hazardous waste from all point sources with the Waterval Smelter - ACP operational area will be stored on a concreted area at designated points around the plant.  A waste service contractor will transport hazardous materials for disposal to a registered hazardous waste site, for which safe disposal certificates will be obtained.  The site for this purpose will currently be Holfontein in Gauteng, unless alternative suitably licensed facilities are identified.

  • Currently, the runoff from the existing temporary waste storage area is collected in three sumps.  When full, the sumps are pumped out into drums and then taken to the oil separator.  The oil and oil contaminated waste from the oil separator is recovered by an authorised waste service provider.
