PROJECT SYNOPSIS

Tronox Mineral Sands (Pty) (Ltd) (Tronox) mines heavy mineral sands at the existing Namakwa Sands Mine at Brand se Baai. Tronox is authorised to mine and process the deeper Orange Feldspathic Sand (OFS) resource underlying the currently mined material at the East Mine (known as the EOFS Project). For the EOFS Project to proceed, Tronox must make modifications to the approved plans for the upgrading of the seawater intake. Additionally, the final Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) described the post-mining topography of the two Sand Tailings Facilities (STF) (STF1 and STF2) inaccurately. As such, changes in the description of the post-mining topography of STF1 and STF2 are required.

Tronox require amendments to the Environmental Authorisation (EA) in terms of the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 (NEMA) and the EIA Regulations, 2014, the Water Use Authorisation in terms of the National Water Act 36 of 1998 (NWA) and an amendment to their approved Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) in order to allow for the project changes.

SRK Consulting (South Africa) Pty Ltd (SRK) has been appointed to undertake the required EA, EMPr and WUA Amendment Applications.
